MODULE 1

ESSENTIAL INSIGHT INTO HOW GLAZES REACT

We start off with the course framework, covering the key elements of each module, and here you’ll gain insights into the methodology behind skill-building exercises, and understand the framework for our one-on-one sparring sessions. This is great for pottery beginners and for learning more about pottery glazing at home.

Module Content

The modules build on each other, so that you will progressively enhance your understanding and skills of glazing techniques. The content focuses on theory, practical applications, and strategies that can be directly applied to your work.

Approach to Glazing Skill-Building

Our approach to skill-building exercises for glazing is to reinforce learning while being manageable. Hands-on exercises for glazing are aligned with the content covered in the modules and are designed to encourage reflection and application. Feedback in the 1:1 sparring sessions is an integral part of this process, allowing for continuous improvement on the pottery glazing techniques you learn.

1:1 Sparring Sessions

The structure of these sessions is aimed at fostering an interactive and supportive environment that will help you improve your glazing skills. The session is tailored to address your individual needs and provides an opportunity for deeper exploration of concepts and challenges you might be having in your pottery glazing practice. You will receive personalised guidance where you can share your experiences, insights, and questions regarding glazing and the techniques you learn.

This maximises your learning experience and ensures that you gain the most from each component of the glazing course.

Essential Insight into Glaze

Prevent the frustration of producing works that don’t meet your expectations. Understanding how glazes change and react based on your method of working with them is crucial.
This module will help you develop a foundational knowledge of glazing that will save you time, energy, and materials. You will be provided with essential insight into the behaviour of glazes and the reasons why glaze flaws occur.

MODULE 2

MASTERING DIPPING GLAZE TECHNIQUES

Transform a simple bag of glaze powder into a fully usable dipping glaze. Explore various techniques for glazing items such as cups, dishes, and larger pieces, ensuring that you feel confident in your skills.

The entire process of glazing using dipping glazes, which is an essential technique for any aspiring ceramic artist, is opened up for you in this informative module.

Find Your Personal Style

Get a helping hand to spark your creativity. We will dive into the different methods you can employ to achieve a variety of colors and styles on both the insides (and outsides!) of your works.

You will learn techniques for creating sharp glaze lines, glazing near the base of your pieces, and producing a range of unique glaze effects. We will explore the art of layering glazes effectively, all while addressing important considerations to prevent runny glazes from damaging your pieces and your kiln shelves.

Glaze Flaws

Through careful application and a solid understanding of glazing techniques, you will be well-equipped to create beautiful ceramic pieces that reflect your artistic vision.

This module provides a comprehensive look at common glaze flaws and suggests the necessary preventative measures you can take to prevent them.

Two specific glaze flaws we focus on are pinholing and uneven glaze applications. Here, we discuss the causes and explore effective remedies to help ensure that your finished work meets your expectations for quality and aesthetics.

MODULE 3

HOW TO GET GREAT RESULTS WITH BRUSH-ON GLAZES

Achieve flawless results with brush-on glazes. When to use a brush-on glaze vs. a dipping glaze? Get to know the advantages (and disadvantages) of each first hand!

Glaze Types & Experimentation

Become versed in the various types of glazes, such as Celadon and Shino glazes, and be able to discuss their unique characteristics in this part of the course.

The starting point is on three great brands: Amaco glazes, Botz glazes, and Paint It glazes. For each, you will learn about different applications and techniques, alongside creative glaze design ideas. Additionally, you will engage in hands-on experimentation with glaze layering to better understand the interaction between different glazes.

Effect Glazes

Learn how to utilise effect glazes to modify the colours and characteristics of your base glazes effectively. This ensures the application is done correctly and helps prevent any glaze flaws.

This comprehensive approach to effect glazes enhances your glazing skills and expands your creative horizons.
