This is great for pottery beginners and for learning more about pottery glazing at home.

The modules build on each other, so that you will progressively enhance your understanding and skills of glazing techniques. The content focuses on theory, practical applications, and strategies that can be directly applied to your work.

Our approach to skill-building exercises for glazing is to reinforce learning while being manageable. The entire process of glazing using dipping glazes, which is an essential technique for any aspiring ceramic artist, is opened up for you in this enlightening module.

Find your personal style

Get a hand in sparking your creativity. We’ll dive into the different methods you can employ to achieve a variety of colours and styles on both the insides (and outsides!) of your works.

You’ll be equipped with the techniques for creating sharp glaze lines, glazing close to the bottom of your pieces, and producing a range of unique effects in your glaze application. We will explore the art of layering glazes effectively, all while addressing important considerations to prevent runny glazes from damaging your pieces and your kiln shelves.

Glaze flaws

Through careful application and a solid understanding of glazing techniques, you will be well-equipped to create beautiful ceramic pieces that reflect your artistic vision.

This module provides a comprehensive look at common glaze flaws and suggests the necessary preventative measures you can take to prevent them.

Two specific glaze flaws we focus on are pinholing and uneven glaze applications. Here, we discuss the causes and explore effective remedies to help ensure that your finished work meets your expectations for quality and aesthetics.

how to get great results with brush-on glazes

Achieve flawless results with brush-on glazes. When to use a brush-on glaze vs. a dipping glaze? Get to know the advantages (and disadvantages) of each first hand!

Glaze types & experimentation

Become versed in the various types of glazes, such as Celadon and Shino glazes, and be able to discuss their unique characteristics in this part of the course.

The starting point is on three great brands: Amaco glazes, Botz glazes, and Paint It glazes. For each, you will learn about different applications and techniques, alongside creative glaze design ideas. Additionally, you will engage in hands-on experimentation with glaze layering to better understand the interaction between different glazes.

Effect glazes
