These ribs allows you to create the final shape while throwing, so you can often skip trimming altogether. I myself simply let the pieces pop off my bat system the next day and clean it up with a damp sponge.
Get a consistent height and diameter with the built-in ruler, notches and centre markings.
Reduce the risk of cracks when compressing the base with the curved top.
The rib is double-sided, and can be used by right- and left-handed potters.
